Salute to the Dignity of a Transgender Person A True Story (Names, addresses, and other personal details have been kept confidential) A transgender person from Northern Punjab contacted Mr. Ansar Javed, Chairman of the Transgender Rehabilitation & Welfare Society and a psychologist at Birth Defects Foundation. They shared their story with him: “I was born as a boy. At the age of 18, under pressure from society and bad company, I had a surgery to remove a special part of my body. I never told my parents. Later, even though I tried to stop them, my parents arranged my marriage, not knowing the truth. On our wedding night, my wife discovered my reality and fainted. For nearly two years, she remained mentally disturbed and told no one. She continued living with me and my family. Later, my wife gave birth to a child. I raised that child as a father and gave him all the love and care a real father would. As time passed, that child grew up, got married, and now I am a grandfather. I never let the child feel that I was anything less than a father. I fulfilled all my responsibilities with love and care. This is where we salute the dignity and strength of this transgender person. (Note: If this story seems similar to anyone’s life, it is only a coincidence.) This person is now around 45 years old. He asked: “Can I return to the way Allah created me, the way I was before the surgery 27 years ago—a completely normal boy?” This story is a message for all transgender individuals and their parents: Transgenders are not born, they become over time. At birth, every child is either a normal boy or a girl. Transgender signs usually begin to show around the age of 4. If your child, whether a boy or a girl, starts showing behaviors of the opposite gender, immediately consult a qualified psychologist. Or, you can visit the Birth Defects Foundation & Transgender Rehabilitation Welfare Society, where treatment is 100% free. It’s important for the transgender community to understand that the gender you are born with is your true gender. The other, self-assumed gender is treatable. Those who go through gender-change surgeries may find some relief, but they can never become biological parents. However, if treated by a good psychologist, people can return to their original identity and still become mothers or fathers naturally. Even without treatment, the ability to become a parent remains within the gender they were originally born into.
