About Us
A registered charity providing free surgery, medicine and lifelong care for children born with birth defects in Pakistan.
A charity built around the child
Birth Defects Foundation (BDF) was registered in 2017 under the Societies Act of 1860, and is recognised by the Charity Commission and the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) as a non-profit. Our mission is the treatment and surgical care of children with more than 18 types of congenital anomalies.
Consultations, prescription medicines and ultrasounds are free at all of our centres. For many families, that is the difference between a child who is treated and a child who never is.
Five centres across Pakistan
We run centres in Lahore (two), Karachi, Rawalpindi and Bahawalpur. The Bahawalpur centre houses Pakistan's first dedicated CAH Research Center.
What we do
- Corrective surgery for cleft lip and palate and for intersex (DSD) conditions.
- Lifelong medicine (hydrocortisone and fludrocortisone) for children with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH), supporting more than 300 families every month. Care Foundation USA provides virtual outpatient consultations for these patients.
- Free OPD and ultrasound at all centres.
- Counselling and rehabilitation, including free psychological counselling and digital skills training for intersex and transgender individuals, children affected by cleft conditions, orphans and the public.
- Education and advocacy. BDF has proposed a course on intersex health and gender dysphoria for BS/MS university curricula and presented it to the Chairman of the Higher Education Commission.
